A Tribute to the Amazing Female Nomads of the World

Tom Petty once sang, “After all it was a great big world with lots of places to run to”. And that’s exactly what we elegantly fine, adventurously independent, and ridiculously sexy women are doing these days. We aren’t running from anything (except cute boys chasing after us), but rather we’re running towards each and every opportunity and adventure this Great Big World has to offer us.
Yes, you cute boys are doing it too, but this is a tribute to the girls that are kickin’ ass, makin’ moves, and living an extraordinary life on their own terms. So step aside boys.
You know, it wasn’t long ago that we were deemed to be homemakers while the boys were of bringing in the bread. A lot has changed since then. Us ladies are bringing in our own bread while we also make our homes and do everything else that we do. Now, I’m no feminist, but I will say that I am damn proud to be a lady and to know so many other women that are off blazing their own trails.
We’re living in a time when ladies are no longer walking behind as the men (pretend to
) navigate the directions and figure out the crazy transportation mishaps that always happen during international travel… and in life in general for that matter.
We are… World Navigators
We are women travelers with our map in hand, a backbone that can stop the local taxi man from ripping us off, and a desire to explore the unknown and expand our horizons.
We are… Nomadic Entrepreneurs
We are female nomadic entrepreneurs roaming the world’s markets for products and inspiration to start our own business from our laptops and be our own bosses.
We are… Status Quo Destroyers
We are lady explorers who may look like put-together and well-mannered ladies on our home turf, but little do they know that we just returned from a 5 day trek in the Himalayas, or bungee jumping in New Zealand or tree house living in Costa Rica!
We are… World Changers
We are women world changers who are venturing off to all corners of the world as we work alongside a village’s people to farm, dig wills, build homes, and teach them the skills they need to thrive.
Maybe those cheesy Spice Girls had it right back in the 90’s when they were holding up those peace signs and singing about Girl Power because all I can say is that us ladies, well, WE ROCK.
Damn, It Feels Good To Be A Woman
And so, as I hold up my Caipirinha that reminds me of days spent on Rio’s beaches, here’s to you, my fellow chicks, who are traveling the world, starting your businesses, destroying the status quo, and creating lasting change.
And for those ladies out there that know you’re meant to be doing it but there’s that little thing called doubt or fear stopping you, well, don’t forget you’ve got an army of support from every badass chick out there that would love to have you join them on one of their adventures.
Keep Exploring. Keep Creating Change. Keep Setting Examples. Keep Living the Crazy Travel Life.
You’re an inspiration to me, every female nomad of the world, and to even all those cute boys too.

Your Motherland Offers More Adventure Than You Think
Nice anthemic post Lauren,
You know when I was in Central America I saw twice the amount of solo female travelers as I did male travelers. I have no idea why but it wasn’t subtle and I talked to a lot of others about it who also noticed it as well.
At one time perhaps people thought it was dangerous for a woman to travel alone but I can see lots of us doing it.
Hey Ayngelina!
Actually, you know what? When I was in South America – Argentina – doing my study abroad, the majority of people in my group and classes were females! Although we’re not talking solo travelers here, it’s still quite interesting. Unfortunately for the boys, we were all after the sexy south american boys so they didn’t quite get to take advantage haha.
I actually have never done a true solo mission but I definitely plan to do it soon. I think I’d get an even deeper sense of adventure and understanding of myself by just going on my own and seeing where I take myself.
I remember looking at study abroad stats a few years ago–more women study abroad than men, something like a 60% / 40% breakdown. On my 10-person program in Nepal, 7 of my classmates were women!
Great post. I came to Australia alone, and while I actually wound up finding a Mr., I’ve taken several solo trips for the first time in my life. It’s liberating.
Hey Lauren!
Boys are good for certain things haha.
Hey ain’t nothin wrong with finding a Mr.
As I was telling Ayngelina above, I’ve never actually done a solo trip myself. I think it’s really awesome that you guys have just picked up on your own and took off to where your heart desired. It’s really inspiring! I’ve done my fair share of travel, but solo travel is the next level for me I think!
Nice post, Lauren, thanks for such an awesome shout-out to female travelers! I’m bookmarking this so that any time I start to question myself and the choices I make, I can read it and remember “Oh right, that’s why.” As Ayngelina said, “anthemic!”
Hey Jasselyn!
Sometimes we just need those little reminders in life that say, “oh right, that’s why”.
Thanks for the kind words!
There’s nothing cooler (other than the travel itself of course) than being a badass, adventure seeking, globe trotting female traveler!
Loved your post!! When I first travelled solo I was terrified, I had heard too many horror stories, but it was one of the best things I ever did! I learnt so much about myself and as Lauren posted earlier it is liberating! Enjoy your future solo travels!!
Hey Mink!
I truly admire anyone that has blazed their own trail by travelling solo. It is a experience of being with oneself, of independence, of learning to be comfortable in your own skin. How cool is it to be the leader of your own adventure on your own terms? Yea, it’s definitely terrifying at times, but that’s why it feels so when we step over that boundary and we realized, “Wow. I took myself here.”
Enjoy your future solo travels as well Mink!
Wonderful post. Makes me feel all empowered all over again.
Lauren,
First of all, I NEVER comment on blogs, although I am starting to get more and more into reading them and am considering starting my own once I find a more focused topic besides my inner ramblings. But this post inspired me to do so.
I am leaving for Costa Rica for 3 weeks as a solo, female traveler! Some friends call me crazy, my dad is worried sick, but I couldn’t be more excited. My flight literally takes off in 5 hours and I won’t lie, I was just starting to get a little pit in my stomach as this is my first experience by myself. Reading this post just put me at so much ease and rekindled my excitement. I am on a mission not only to grow as an individual, but show the world woman aren’t afraid and are taking new directions.
This has also empowered me because I just quit my full-time sales job. This was my first “career” job as I graduated in August with my marketing degree and hated it within 3 months. I am ready to break the cycle of living as a machine for a company and discover an innovative way to make it on my own. I hope my trip will help spark my entrepreneurial spirit so I do not have to come back and start the terrible process of job-hunting again.
Thank you for this tribute and the inspiration,
Elizabeth
Hey Elizabeth!
Wow I am so thankful for your comment it put a huge smile on my face!
I am so excited for you! You rock! You probably don’t even realize just how inspiring it is to those around you in your life that are watching you on this adventure. Yea they may think you’re crazy, but that’s because you are! And in a good way
B/c these days doing anything that’s not on a paved and worn down path looks crazy
It’s the crazy people that really LIVE!
I hope that on your journey in Costa Rica you learn a lot about yourself and experience amazing adventures everyday! I love trips that when you come back from them you’re just a totally different person and have all this new inspiration and outlook. I live for experiences like that!
I hope you start a blog and I listen to that entrepreneurial blood you’ve got! I’d love to follow your journey and I’m sure you’ve got quite a story to tell!
