Digital games for travelers

So you’ve done some traveling and maybe learned a thing or two in the process…why not put some of that knowledge to the test? Here are some ways to test your travel knowledge, kill some time and maybe learn a few things in the process.
The traveler IQ challenge
(Also available as a Facebook app)
This is an online game that tests your knowledge in many areas. Choose from plotting city names on a world map, plotting according to country flag, finding locations based on viewing a photo and many other options for this game. Thanks to this game, I now know that I have a whole lot to learn. (Flags? Really? I’m terrible at that one.)
Airport Codes Challenge
My BFF and I often wish people would communicate in airport codes. It’s so much easier and saves so much space in texts and Tweets. Alas, most people do not know many airport codes. Flight attendants are required to know airport codes (Bobbie, let us know how you do on this test) but most of us just pick them up as we travel. How many do you know?
Whereables
Whereables is a game that is kind of a combo of the two previous games. Using Google Maps, this game presents an airport name to you and your job is to click its location on the world map.
Travel Agency
You can build your own farm on Farmville and now you can run your own travel agency with the Travel Agency game. Create travel packages for many different types of customers, hire workers and keep them motivated and work through several career levels. Downloadable game is available for Windows XP/Vista and Mac. First hour of play is free and it’s $6.99 after that for the full version.
Digital Dialects
DigitalDialects.com actually contains many games with the goal of helping you learn a new language while having fun. Choose one of 60 languages you’d like to learn and then select from a list of games including phrases, food, time, etc.
Earth Contest
This app was created to work with Google Earth. Challenges are presented and travel around the world is involved in an effort to beat the GameMaster. Placemarkers and clues inform players how to proceed through each step of the game.
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?
The old classic game can now be played online in its original form. It would be so great to have this game recreated using modern technology but for now this old version will have to do.

Great list! For a while in college, I was obsessed with the Traveler IQ Challenge on Facebook. Playing it over and over made me realize both how good and how terrible my geography is. The world is so big! And I know next to nothing about Africa.
And Carmen Sandiego! One of my favorite TV shows/computer games when I was younger. Ah, the memories.
If you want to get old-school, you could throw in the original Oregon Trail for good measure. I mean, who DIDN’T play that game?
